I want share my experience with the DNS surgery .This information provided is purely on my personal experience .Each and every one's body reacts different and you should ask your physician for any doubts or questions if you have any problems because of the surgery.
I have been with deviated septum for 34 years and it never caused me any issues until when i started my travel to US on 2013. I got affected with several cold which i thought was because of the flu season there. Things got better after a couple of weeks. Then when i returned to india, I was motivated to yoga specifically pranayama , thats where i thought i needed to do this surgery. With Deviated septum which almost 80% blockage of air flow it caused sever head pain when i practiced pranayama.
I decided not to get into surgery as this was not causing any problems other than not being practicing pranayama. Then came another travel to US and this time to the mountain time zone in US where the humidity in air is very less. I got everything once i landed. Sever cold, sinus infections and this was troubling me for about two months. I was advised that , due to the DNS i was getting all the issue . The air is not humid enough and the my nose is deviated which makes it difficult to do it function. He advised me to go for DNS surgery and the doctor back in india also advised me the same as i was constantly getting cold and sore throat while back in india . so finally decided to correct my DNS, so i am free of sinus and cold problems. After i developed sinusitis and cold in US , I got tinnitus accompanying as well. Doctor in US said, this might be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction with fluids in the ear. I had lab test to clear any Eustachian tube dysfunction.i still remain ignore of the ringing in my ear, even after the surgery . This is a different story in my body and i will come back to the surgery details .
I came back to india for the surgery and as per doctor advice, i can be flying again after 14 days back to US . i thought it is going to be easy 14 days . I cleared all the blood work test needed before the surgery and got under the knife.
At the operating theater :
The scene what i remember is , there were Doctors surrounding me and getting ready to inject anesthesia . It was general anesthesia and once it was injected there was a feeling of cool liquid flow in the hands where it was injected. Just about few seconds , boom i could nt recollect anything and was unconscious. Later when i woke up , there was feeling of mouth fullness of gum. I could not speak and there was pain in the throat and package stuffed in nose with pipes attached.Gum feeling is because of clotted blood drained to the throat during surgery and i was left in the post -operation space until i get into conscious state. I got help from the attendant to get a paper towel to spit the thing from throat ..it was blood.. There was a huge pack of cotton package stuffed in my nose with two pipes for breathing. it was actually breathing through pipe not from nose for next two days..
At the hospital room:
Doctor said there will be pain in the throat because of the oxygen tube inserted to the throat during surgery and the stuff in the nose will be taken after 48 hrs. he also said i had lot of polyps cleaned from sinus and it was a gross deviation which needed lot of stitches. he said the stitches would dissolve on it own.There is also x-ray splint kept to straightened the nose . I was advised not to take solid food after the surgery untill evening . I had surgery done by 1 PM and was able to see my family after 4 PM when i came out of post -operation space. I had vomit sensation when i started eating solid food. Then switched to liquid food because of the vomit sensation until night.The pain in the throat was bothering me a lot , since i have to take a lot of time to consume each piece of food fed to my mouth.
i was advised to keep my head raised to avoid blood flow, However there was blood coming out of the stuffed package. I has to waste a lot of tissue paper to clean it. finally called the doctor to replace the package. they just replaced outer covering of the stuff package. After 48 hrs , the stuff package was removed , it was little painful when it was taken . The blood was looking like a dark one mixed with mucous or some kind...finally felt good when they took a huge stuff from nose with pipes.. but still the throat was painful and the blood drains through nose..I made a mustache with cotton pads to catch the drain blood and was changing it whenever there is more blood.Doctor advised to come after 10 days to remove x-ray splint. I was given nasivion drops to apply to the nose.This will remove any nosal block and keep the air flow going. I was also given antibiotics and pain killers to follow up for next 10 days.
Loss of smell :
out fo all the pain i was facing and suddenly ,I noticed that i lost the sense of smell as well ..I was bit worried and like everybody started googling and got scared more that i will never get my sense of smell back. There were article which told about no gain of smell , gain of smell about 1 year or in small percentage..I clarified with my doctor , He said it is normal and it is due to nose block .. He said i would get my smell back.. A little bit of advise who reads this post.I would advice, better speak to your doctor when you get a issue. Google helps , however there is surplus information available and you cannot match yours to anything..The best option is to consult your doctor.I even doubted whether they did my surgery correct , because there was a article which said if surgery is not performed well , sense of smell will be lost permanently. I was having hard days and worrying a lot..because you will also lose the sense of taste. Smell and taste go together.. i was having food with no taste for next 5-6 days.. One fine evening i smelled fragrance coming out of incense stick in home .I was happy when i smelled and it last for few hours.. the smelled went away. That gave me hope that i will get my smell and taste back.
New year night
With X-ray Splints on and with pain in throat coming down, things got better. The swelling around the nose started decreasing , however i was having blood flow coming from nose. I used to have a cotton pad as mustache. I was having goggling with warmwater with salt for throat, this helped a lot.
Also take care of the nose while sleeping , sometime i hit my nose while sleeping while moving the hands around. Also it is better to cover the nose while going out to remain away from dust . When ever you feeling like letting your mucus out , don't do anything with much force. Be gentle and dont pull your mucous back to your mouth to spit. Doctor adviced me to always to let mucus outside through nose. Some times you will get the sensation of sneezing, try to sneezing opening your mouth so that you don't put the pressure of sneezing in the nose.
It was sixth day and it was new year night to celebrate. Though it was cold , went out and celebrated the new year night with wife.
After the splint removal:
Mean while even before X-ray splint removal , I got my smell back and felt wonderful. I realized the power given to mankind by God. you don't need any other external things to make you happy, just with your own sense who can be happy . I was enjoying the smell of coffee i drank, I was enjoying the taste of it . Then came the day for X-ray splint , it was a removed in a minute . No pain at all . Doctor told everything is perfect and gave a solspre spray (it is a salt solution but gama radiated and pressurized). I was advised to clean my nose everyday twice with it. once i put in the spray , I used to get all the nasty blood clumps out from nose . sometime you wont believe of things coming from your nose. Be gentle and when you do this things from your nose.
After the x-ray splint removal i started getting my soccer studds on and was ready for soccer games.
Doctor adviced me not to do that because any injury to my nose again during surgery recovery will make it difficult. however i took risk i was tied up in bed for long time that i want to go out and enjoy my game. I made sure i did not do anything stupid in the game. it all went fine.
I was continuing to clean my nose with the nasal spray and getting the nasty lumps still coming out with mucus.
After Flight travel:
I was granted permission to fly again and the need for me to fly in 14 days got postponed to 30 days .so i got enough more time to be with my family and home. However i was ready to fly after 14 days.Visited the doctor again before the travel .he adviced me with the nasal spray and fluticone spray.
He advised me to continue some medicine for a while to avoid polyps popping again which i still to take. However once interesting thing happened, after flight travel . I was sneezing a lot and with mouth shut.. once i landed and cleaned my stuff i got a stitching thread with knot coming. Even after 30 days i still get little blood mucus lumps out from nose, this was having the stitching thread. I will also getting the fresh blood while cleaning however this was not draining from nose.called my doctor he asked me to not to clean for five days to let the wound dry. I felt comfortable the next day itself which the blood getting clot .Hope everything goes on good from now on.. I still have the ringing in my ear, may 2014 is to find out the reason for it.. but not for next three months..
The journey and recovery through my surgery was made easy with the support of wife being near by and taking care of me very well and advising me at right time not to do anything stupid..I owe her a lot ..

Finally it is worth going for the surgery as i can feel my breathe and air flow improved better and surprisingly the flight travel after the surgery did not cause any Eustachian tube issues like pain or blockage.There was minor blocking sensation , but i made sure i chewed a lot of gum during take off and landing...
Update on Apr 9, I was completely unaware of this blogsite that i had opened myself and surprised to see my entry on DNS surgery. I can still see the positive effects of the surgery, it has helped me a lot, no more sore throats and i am infact living in US now without any cold issues. I am happy that i did this surgery.
